A PUBLIC MELTDOWN

Why'osphere
In 2018, I had the privilege of visiting Franz Josef Glacier on New Zealand’s South Island, a uniquely situated glacier flanked by ocean on one side and rainforest on the other. Its vivid blue ice, cascading slides, and accessible ice caves left a profound impression on me. Shortly after, I visited Fox Glacier, anticipating a similar experience. Instead, I was confronted with a stark reminder of our warming planet. At the viewpoint, a sign depicted the glacier's position in 1990 alongside a projection for its retreat by 2025. To my shock, in 2018, the glacier had already receded far beyond that projected point.

To my shock, in 2018, the glacier had already receded far beyond that projected point. This contrast between expectation and reality stayed with me. Then, in May 2024, I came across a Guardian report on how Venezuela’s last remaining glacier was officially reclassified as an ice field - a symbolic and literal loss. The sense of urgency deepened further in August 2024, when mountaineer Duncan Porter returned to Mont Blanc after 15 years, only to find the glacier he had once known all but vanished, as reported by The Metro. These moments stirred a deep need within me, not only to process what we are losing but to act! While there are already many documentaries detailing glacial loss and its consequences, I wanted to create something that goes beyond facts and figures. This project is designed to be stark, immersive, and emotionally resonant, an experience that allows audiences to truly feel what is at stake. By engaging the senses and offering a visceral connection to disappearing landscapes, I hope to create a more personal and lasting impact. Importantly, this project is not about inducing guilt. I don’t want audiences to leave feeling overwhelmed or helpless or to feel yet more blame. Instead, I want them to leave feeling empowered - with a renewed sense of connection to the natural world and the belief that meaningful change is possible. I aim to inspire action that feels accessible and sustainable, not rooted in sacrifice but in energy, hope, and collective momentum.

Cryosphere: A Public Meltdown is a powerful, immersive event designed to take audiences on a visceral journey into the heart of the climate crisis through the lens of melting glaciers. This multi-sensory experience blends documentary storytelling, poetic reflection, and projection mapping to create an inspirational tribute to one of Earth’s most vital and most threatened ecosystems: the cryosphere.
At its core, Cryosphere: A Public Meltdown is not just about glaciers, it’s about memory, displacement, and our shared responsibility to the planet and future generations. By combining raw beauty with hard truths, this event hopes to spark emotion, conversation, and ultimately, action.
