More About Glaciers

This is the space to introduce visitors to the business or brand. Briefly explain who's behind it, what it does and what makes it unique. Share its core values and what this site has to offer.

A silent witness to a vanishing world.

Shot in the heart of Iceland’s Vatnajökull national park, this aerial footage captures the scale, stillness, and slow collapse of glacial giants, a visual elegy for the Cryosphere.

About Glaciers

A glacier is a massive, slow-moving body of ice formed from compacted layers of snow over many years. Found in polar regions and mountainous areas, glaciers flow under their own weight, constantly reshaping the landscape as they carve valleys and transport sediment.

They are crucial indicators of climate change, serving as both freshwater reservoirs and key components of Earth's ecosystem.

This project is about living well, while staying conscious of our impact on the planet.
Cryosphere: A Public Meltdown offers a space to learn about glaciers, perhaps even see them for the first time - and, hopefully, not the last.

But if you want to witness a glacier in person, Ice Guardians are the people to go with.

This is not a paid advertisement or sponsored post. Ice Guardians are an adventure guide company based in South East Iceland who truly care about what they do.

Their experiences are immersive, educational, and unforgettable, and most importantly, sustainable.

Their adventures include glacier hikes, ice climbing, canyoning, and ice cave explorations in Vatnajökull National Park, Europe's largest ice cap by volume.

Beyond thrilling activities, Ice Guardians emphasises education and environmental stewardship. Their guides are certified professionals who provide insights into glacier behaviour, climate change, and the geological forces shaping Iceland's landscapes.

For those seeking a meaningful and responsible way to experience Iceland's icy wonders, Ice Guardians offers adventures that inspire and inform.

After Ice  by Kieran Baxter, Þorvarður Árnason and M Jackson.

This film came to my attention during the making of Cryosphere: APM, but it couldn’t have come at a better time.

This project was filmed on Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier Outlet in Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park, so you can imagine my excitement watching this film knowing I was about to film in the exact location.

I have watched this film countless times, and it is as heart-breaking as it is breathtaking; however, my experience of watching it wholly changed after actually standing on that same glacier.

The awards and accolades this film and its creators garnered are so deserved; it is truly a beautiful piece of work, and I urge you as a matter of importance to watch this.

Sometimes, there is a heavy presence when someone is talking about glaciers or when you are learning about them. However, let it be said that Ice Rivers by Jemma Wadham is an absolute gift!

Wadham's fervent love letter to glaciers takes you on a journey like never before. An impassioned tale of adventure, community, and as one of the world's leading glaciologists – ice!
This unique memoir carried my imagination whilst simultaneously pushing my own creativity into new frozen dimensions. I highly recommend it, especially if you want to immerse yourself into this icy climate, but even if you are just looking for your next read, get this book!

Glacier Facts

Glaciers form over long periods where snow accumulates and compresses into ice.
Glaciers "flow" slowly, like very slow rivers, moving downhill under the force of gravity.
Glaciers, like snow and ice, are highly reflective and reflect a significant amount of sunlight back into space, helping to cool the planet. This reflectivity, known as albedo, is crucial for maintaining Earth's climate stability.
